5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the complete beginner   January 22, 2000

I tried three beginner's adult piano books, and I found this by far the best. The other two were The Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing the Piano, which had too much talk and not enough practice pieces, and You Can Play Piano, which was OK.

Another reviewer mentioned that the book uses an unorthodox notation. This is true; the musical notes have the letter written on them, so that, for example, a middle C is not just a black spot, but a black spot with a white C inside it. This is certainly non-standard, but I found it very handy--at the early stages of learning you're trying very hard to coordinate your sight of the notes on the page with your fingers and your understanding of which notes on the keyboard are which. Every little helps, and this helped me a lot. It doesn't hurt much, because you do get familiar with the standard notation at the same time, and it makes getting started much less painful.

The best thing about this book, however, is that there are lots of songs you can play to practice. Within a week I was playing (not perfectly, but recognizably) Cockles and Mussels, When the Saints, Londonderry Air, Skater's Waltz, Home Sweet Home, Row Row Your Boat, Now is the Hour, Marianne, Long Long Ago, Frere Jacques and Greensleeves. This is *lots* more fun than playing the same one or two songs over and over again. Plus these songs are all arranged for two hands, with very simple left hand arrangements to start with.

At the back of the book are twenty more songs arranged both for complete beginners and for people who have completed the first half of the book. Even at a very early stage it is fun to poke around in this section and pick out at least the melody line with the right hand.

Overall, very strongly recommended. I've had a lot of fun with this book and I expect to have a lot more.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Me   January 10, 2008

The reviewer who said, "It sure is easy" seems to have missed the point. It is meant to be a beginner's book, a guide for someone who has never played a keyboard and can't read music. It provides an excellent introduction to note-reading, and you will be playing songs within the first few days. As a total beginner (who is working with a teacher), I'm having a lot of fun and enjoying this book immensely.

I am so pleased with this book. It is very good and also has so many songs that a new player can learn. I am happy I found it and think any adult or senior would like this book.

4 out of 5 stars perfect! This is what I was looking for.   September 24, 2009

We just recieved a piano as a gift from my parents for my young daughter. I haven't had piano lessons since a young child myself so I wanted something to refresh my memory and get me comfortable playing the piano - something other than the basic primers.
This is great. I was able to play Greensleeves in no time. The instructions are precise and helpful. I love how the notes are labeled, it helps me get re-familiar with reading music. I didn't rate it 5 stars because it makes the great-leap to advanced-beginner quicker than I think it should. This is a Beginner's course, it should stay more beinner than moving onto the advanced lessons. I would have preferred a few more songs to practice on.
Some of the music I have never heard of. I would have liked more familiar tunes as well.
BUT overall, this book has been really helpful and great! I love it and will continue pounding away with it.

3 out of 5 stars It sure is easy.   May 21, 2001

This book is really "EASY"

This is truly for the beginner. If you have no idea and you want step by step instructions for playing songs in very elementary arrangements this would be useful.

If you have some experience skip this. The songs are very dated but most of all the arangements are TOO simple. Sounds like some 5 year old playing on a toy piano.

A first grader would be done with this book in 1 month. Easy adult piano is a misnomer. It should be called "adult plays easy piano"

If you have NO piano experience and need step by step instructions in clear language and BIG notation this is it. You can't go wrong. Actually the large notation is a plus. It is better to have readable notes than some tiny ones. It really is geared for those who have never touched a keyboard. Children can be instructed with this book. I think it is more appropriate for them than adults. They won't have any trouble understanding the instructions.

On the other hand If you have any some experience you need another book.

A beginner wont be too frustrated using this book and could be a confidence builder.

4.5 stars for a true beginner

2.5 stars for an intermediate player

0.5 stars for an advanced player. (another book for your piano reference library)
